The Bala is cold-pressed with 100% organic ingredients including hazelnuts, raw cacao, cocoa powder, dates, nutmeg, jacobsen sea salt, and filtered water. Our ingredients are locally sourced and the final juice is raw and unpasteurized. This also means we do not use the HPP (high pressure pasteurization) method.
Hazelnuts have a great nutrient profile. Loaded with healthy fats, vitamin B6, folate, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Hazelnuts are packed full of antioxidants, protecting the body from oxidative stress, which can damage cell structure and promote aging, cancer and heart disease. Hazelnuts have been linked to reduced inflammation, thanks to their high concentrations of healthy fats.
A hazelnut may also be known as a cobnut or filbert. The traditional term for a grove of hazelnut trees is a “plat”. In 1995, a Mesolithic hazelnut roasting pit was found in Colonsay Scotland which dated to 6000 BC. In the U.S., 99% of our nation’s production of hazelnuts comes from Oregon with a crop value of $129 million. Ferrero SpA, the maker of Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, uses 25% of the worlds production of hazelnuts.
Cacao beans are native to the American continents. Indigenous peoples used cacao for centuries before it gained popularity in Europe in the 1600s. And now it is one of the most beloved ingredients in the world. So, what is the difference between cacao and cocoa? Raw cacao is made by cold-pressing un-roasted cacao beans. This process retains the living enzymes in the beans and removes the fat (cocoa butter). Cacao beans contain antioxidants that promote general health and protect against disease. Among other things, raw cacao is a natural energy booster. Because it contains Theobromine, which is similar in structure to caffeine, cacao is a great source of energy. Cacao can protect nerves from injury and inflammation. It’s more than just delicious.
Dates add natural sweetness. They contain simple sugars in the form of fructose. This is what makes dates such a delicious treat. In addition to being an anti-inflammatory, dates are an easily digestible sweetener. As a result, dates are great for those with an intolerance towards processed sugars. They also contain vitamin A, iron, potassium, and fiber among other vitamins and minerals.
Nutmeg keeps the brain sharp! It contains a natural compound called myristicin, which shields your brain from degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. It also contains trace minerals that strengthen the immune system. Potassium, calcium, iron, and manganese are among key minerals in nutmeg. It also adds the perfect touch of warmth to the Bala!
